Taylor’s Mistake

My cousin Boo and her partner David live in Cashmere, a district in the south of Christchurch. Their house was damaged in the 2011 earthquake and was subsequently demolished and rebuilt five years ago. Boo and I drove into the city a couple of days ago and she took me to the memorial wall which commemorates the 185 people killed.

Today we drove through Sumner and on to a small beach, intriguingly called Taylor’s Mistake, from where we embarked on a circular walk which took us high above the ocean. The views were stupendous as we puffed our way up steep slopes and along paths which, while not quite sheer, still had me steering my steps closer to the inner edge! The sun was blazing and the ocean had tints of purple. Lyttleton Bay was a completely different colour, a sort of glacial blue green.
